EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - According to Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear, an accident took place at Silgan in Evansville that resulted in someone’s death.

A release shows when emergency crews arrived on scene they found a single victim who had suffered from injuries while working on a machine at the plant.

The coroner’s office confirms that person has been identified as 59-year-old Christopher Payton.

Lockyear determined Payton’s cause of death was from blunt force trauma to the head.

Police were called to the area around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

The plant is located just off of North Saint Joseph Avenue and West Maryland Street.

Silgan released a statement Tuesday morning saying:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Christopher Payton, who was a long-time employee and a valued member of the team at our Evansville, Indiana facility. We are fully cooperating with OSHA and the related state agencies in their investigation and are providing counseling services to all employees. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris’ family and friends, as well as our entire plant team and the Silgan community at this difficult time.”
