EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office officials say the suspect involved in a standoff that lasted six hours with police in Evansville has died.

According to a press release, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputies assigned to the United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force were attempting to serve a felony warrant to the 200 block of East Missouri Street in Evansville just before 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Officials say upon making contact with the suspect at the residence, the suspect displayed a firearm and threatened deputies.

Evansville Police Department officials say the suspect barricaded himself inside the home with a firearm.

Officials say after several hours of attempting to get the suspect to surrender, Evansville Police Officers were requested to assist with the standoff.

The Evansville Police SWAT team was also requested for assistance.

Officials say officers attempted for two more hours to have the suspect surrender peacefully but he refused to comply.

The press release states that the efforts for him to comply were unsuccessful and ended with an officer involved shooting.

Police say the suspect was the only one inside the home at the time.

Officials say the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the suspect will be released at a later date by the Coroner’s Office.

This is still an active investigation and more information will be provided Tuesday.
